A story from this morning
At Indigo, each child gets special attention from one of the staff when it's time to say goodbye to mom or dad in the morning. Some children have an easier time: a quick hug and a light kiss. Some kids even jump happily into the arms of their favorite staffer.
For Mikael, it's not easy. He cries almost every morning. We've had better and worse times, but mostly it's been heart-rending sobs. Usually, that kind of crying lasts just a minute or two until the parent is gone, but Mikael has been having a harder time and crying on for several minutes. Me and Opher and the staff talk about the problem every so often and try to think of solutions. It's clear that he's pretty happy at day care, but when will the crying end?
This morning, I asked him my usual question: which of the staff do you want to have go out with us to the gate? Mikael said, "Alone." "What, you want to go out to the gate with me alone?" Mikael: "Yes."
Indigo has two gates. The one where we usually say goodbye leads right out to the sidewalk and the street. It was clear to me that we were only going to go to the inner gate, but Mikael insisted that we go out to the outer gate. Yaelli, our magical manager, followed us, hiding behind corners like a spirit out of a nursery tale, and signaled me to ignore her.
We got to the outer gate, I asked Mikael if this is the place to say goodbye, and he nodded. I asked if he needed a hug and a kiss and he said, "No need," and then immediately changed his mind, "Need."
We hugged and kissed, and he turned around, alone, and walked back to Indigo. Yaelli waited for him in her hiding place, and they went in together.
